Help Needed With XAMPP

I just updated to XAMPP 1.7.0 and when I try to access my index.html on localhost, I am prompted to connect with a username and password, even though none is set. There is no .htaccess file anywhere in my XAMPP folder structure. This is a fresh installation, so I don't know what could be wrong. Any help would be appreciated. Does Apache search the entire file system for instances of .htaccess? I've got a .htaccess in a folder that I'm copying to xampp/htdocs so I can serve up that set of files.

Also, I have removed every single .htaccess and .htpasswd file from my system (nothing in the Recycle Bin, and XP Search finds nothing).
